What is Yoga and Yoga Therapy?
Yoga is an ancient discipline that offers a broad range of tools which can be useful in promoting health, aiding in healing and facilitating spiritual transformation.
Yoga is a holistic healing discipline that addresses the needs of the whole person through continuous adaptation of its many tools to suit the student’s unique and changing needs. This is why with the compassionate guidance of a skilled teacher, Yoga is as appropriate for the young as it is for the old, as appropriate for the stroke victim lying immobile in a hospital bed, as it is for the flexible, athletic dancer. This is why it may be said that Yoga is for everyone. It offers a wide range of tools which include physical practices, special breathing techniques, powerful meditative practices, symbolic gestures and use of vocal sounds, guided self inquiry practices and more
Yoga therapy is a complementary practice leading one to healing and growth of mind, body and spirit. The yoga therapy setting provides a safe environment in which to step back and observe how we are living and learn what changes we can make to experience life more fully.
As an understanding of the mind-body connection deepens, the importance of self-care in all aspects of life becomes clear.
When appropriately administered, Yoga practices may be used in a wide variety of purposes such as:
- promoting and maintaining physical and mental health
- serving as a complementary system of holistic health care - both preventative, and curative
- relieving stress and promoting efficiency
- providing and guiding us in spiritual transformation
- aiding to face and deal with challenging life situations
Self-Care
You can expect an assessment of where you are now, what your goals are in helping to heal your body-mind-spirit and then to work with your therapist as he/she designs a yoga practice just for you. This practice might include any of yoga’s tools including but not limited to: physical movements, special breathing techniques and vocal sound. A practice is designed according your needs and lifestyle. Follow-up is necessary and part of the Yoga Therapy process. Yoga Therapy does not cure or have overnight fixes to our issues. Those interested in healing must be ready and willing to participate in their own health-care.
Sessions are designed for use in home practice and are 50 minutes in length with 30 minute follow-up sessions and phone consultation.

Any discipline that is practiced with intent and consistency will bear its fruit. Yoga is no different. Attention to the moral precepts, to the health of the body, to silence, to action, to our unique responses in each of these things cannot leave us unmoved or unchanged. Anything that is refined and refined becomes more pure. Yoga and its teachings create such purity. This is not to say that difficulty and disturbance do not arise. They will and do. The critical choice for the practitioner is this: Will we continue to be opened by these disturbances and stay attentive and present as the filters of the practice further clarify the entire being?
